Darts ace Devon Petersen is doing it again by bringing his vision of using darts to sharpen maths skills to 500 schools with a R12 million investment.
The Portland-born “African Warrior”, who previously introduced his innovative Dartboard Maths concept during a visit to Cape Town schools, is now helping spearhead an ambitious project that will see 500 schools nationwide benefit from structured school darts programmes.Of those schools, 256 are in the Western Cape.The initiative, driven through the African Dart Group (ADG), the International Darts School League (IDSL), Dartboard Maths, and partners, aims to use the sport as more than just a competitive activity.
Speaking to thePlainsman, Petersen said the programme represents a significant shift in how education and sport can work together, particularly in under-resourced communities.”We are at a pivotal moment where we are finally bridging the gap between classroom potential and athletic opportunity,” he said.
“Our primary focus is on the community schools that need it most. We believe that access to high-quality development should not depend on a school’s location or funding status.”Petersen said each participating school will receive a Darts Starter Kit and access to the IDSL Development Programme, valued at R24,000 annually per school.
Beyond supplying equipment, the programme includes a structured curriculum, teacher and coach training, educational resources, and organised competitions designed to develop learners academically and athletically.Petersen said the International Darts School League provides the framework to modernise the sport across South Africa and eventually the African continent.
“We are moving from a position of being two decades behind global standards to creating a professional academy environment that brings the sport into touching distance of global excellence,” he said.At the heart of the initiative remains Dartboard Maths, a concept Petersen previously described as a way of making mathematics more engaging by using the dartboard as a practical learning tool.
Now, he believes it can do even more.”We are transforming the interaction between classrooms and mathematics,” he said.”By using the dartboard for mental arithmetic and cognitive recall, we turn subconscious mathematics into a competitive, disciplined practice. We aren’t just teaching kids to calculate; we are teaching them to think strategically under pressure.”The programme also introduces Battle Deck, described as the world’s first “Edusport” event, combining mental maths with hand-eye coordination to encourage participation among learners from Grades 4 to 10.
Petersen said support from industry partners has made it possible to bring professional-level resources to schools that have traditionally lacked access to such opportunities.”This R12 million investment is not just about the equipment; it is about the future we are unlocking,” he said.”When you provide the right foundation, our students don’t just participate, they excel. We are proving that education and sport can be combined to create a more equitable playing field for all.”
The latest development builds on Petersen’s long-standing efforts to grow darts on the continent through initiatives including the African Continental Tour, women’s competitions, the Devon Petersen Darts Academy, and the International Darts School League.The former German Darts Championship winner has repeatedly emphasised that his biggest goal extends beyond producing future champions.Instead, he hopes the programme will equip young people with the confidence, discipline, and problem-solving skills needed both in the classroom and beyond.
